Marathon Running as long lasting Team Building activity -promoting your corporate culture and values?
Sometimes when I am leaning back after an exhausting day of supporting our Marathon runners I ask myself what would Pheidippides (the Greek messenger who ran the 42,195km for the first time) thoughts be about his successors. I´m sure he would have very mixed feelings. The colorful outfit might make him smile. For sure he would be impressed by the best times. Back then it took him 2 days - now we have runners who are close to make that distance in impressive 2 hours. Over the past two decades, the act of voluntarily running long distances has gone from a curious hobby for a few solitary fitness addicts to a full-fledged world-wide phenomenon.
As workplace wellness programs are becoming more widespread throughout the country, the buzz is catching on.
The most important part of running a marathon isn’t necessarily one foot in front of the other, it’s the networking and team building that takes place during training runs. A lot can happen in those training runs on your way to the finish line. There will be days with bad weather, hills that seem to rival Everest, and moments of doubt. There will be mornings where you’d rather stay in bed, evenings where you’re just too tired, and weekends that seem made for the beach over the pavement. 1. Why this has become increasingly interesting for companies
The bottom line of such programs is this: healthy employees tend to be happier and more productive employees. These programs range from simply offering information to workers, to subsidized healthy lunches, fitness education, and a company gym. Employees are the most valuable assets to any company.
2. Why do employees like a program like "my company runs marathon"
Another great benefit of wellness programs is a built sense of camaraderie with your co-workers. You’ll have a chance to experience activities with them that aren’t related to work, whether in a walking club or sports team, by having lunch together, or by going to the gym. Social support is a very important part of weight loss and getting fit. By interacting with co-workers, you’ll have others to give you encouragement when you need it, as well as to hold you accountable to your goals. Plus, you’ll be motivated by seeing other’s positive results. By using a wellness program, you’ll be an important part of the team.
3. Not only the company but prospects, clients and friends
Today’s marketplace has almost every business fighting to get noticed. Marketing and sales techniques have been evolving with time and those who fail to adapt struggle to stay afloat. Here is a little insight to a growing trend in marketing that every business, big or small, could leverage: mass participation event sponsor ships.
Having you own team at the start - what can be better? Fun and networking is rolling by itself. Contribute with merchandise, wearable - that´s the easy part.
No other European city has this coolness, this weird combo of laid back and forward at the same time.
Besides: Easy to reach, very reasonable hotel rates, tons of stuff to do around the marathon and offering perfect gastronomic adventures.
You can create the perfect party. A wonderful chance to have all the important people of your company in one place and get the message out.
Even if your company has only one single active runner - the whole company as team can support him. That´s what the spirit of marathon is all about. Stand behind him. Clap. Shout. Pheidippides would be proud!
