In 1633 the Oberammergau villagers made a promise to God. And they kept it until now.
The plague raged in many parts of Europe and did not spare Oberammergau either.
So the God-fearing population swore to perform the Passion Play every 10 years - when God will spare them from the plague. Both parties kept their word.
102 performances, 2000 participating villagers, 450 000 visitors - the Upper Bavarian ambassadors summon the superlatives for 2020. It is even to be invented new Jesus texts. See our Passionplay Package here.
The 42nd Oberammergau Passion Play will take place from May 16th to 4 October 4th 2020. Around 450,000 visitors are expected on 103 match days, according to the homepage of the Passion Play.
The actor Frederik Mayet plays the role of Jesus Christ again at the Oberammergau Passion Play 2020 after the year 2010. In an interview with the daily Die Welt, he explains the grave consequences of his role at that time in his private life and how this time he was better off with the challenge wants to get around.
Because he was so focused on the role of Jesus, in 2010 he neglected his friends and relationship with his wife, which almost led to a break. "The role of Jesus has already determined and changed my life extremely," says the 38-year-old, who suffered from a burn-out after working on the Passion Play. In 51 performances, he had carried the 90-kilogram wooden cross over the stage and let himself be crucified. Nakedness, the five hours of permanent presence on stage and the final agony fed him: "You have to deal with it every night."
