O’zapft is! – Oktoberfest in Munich
Every September, Munich comes alive with the cry of "O'zapft is!" – It’s tapped! – marking the start of the world’s largest folk festival.Despite its name, Oktoberfest doesn’t begin in October. Since 1872, the festival has kicked off in September to take advantage of the milder weather, running for 16 days and ending in early October.
Each year, around 6 million people flock to the Theresienwiese to celebrate, enjoy countless rides, feast on Bavarian delicacies, and of course, raise a glass to the city’s legendary beer.
A Festival with Over 200 Years of Tradition
Oktoberfest began in 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to a grand celebration on the fields later named Theresienwiese in her honor.
What started as a royal wedding festivity has grown into a cultural phenomenon, drawing visitors from every corner of the globe. For Munich locals, it will always simply be “die Wiesn.”
The Tents
Sixteen large beer tents, each seating up to 10,000 guests, are the heart of Oktoberfest. Inside, the atmosphere is electric – filled with live music, clinking glasses, and the smell of roast chicken.
Here, the six Munich breweries – Augustiner, Paulaner, Spaten, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, and Löwenbräu – serve their specially brewed Oktoberfestbier.
In addition, 21 smaller tents offer around 120,000 more seats. On sunny days, you can enjoy your beer in the open-air gardens outside the tents.
The Beer
Brewed only for Oktoberfest, Oktoberfestbier follows the Munich Purity Law of 1487, meaning only water, hops, and malted barley are allowed.
This golden lager is a little stronger than your everyday beer – about 6% ABV – with a smooth, slightly malty flavor, gentle dryness, and relatively low carbonation.
Beer is served in the iconic Maß – a one-liter glass stein – and costs around €15, depending on the tent.

Munich's Oktoberfest attracts millions of visitors every year. In 2022 the Wies'n will take place from mid-September to the beginning of October. (See exact dates)
Dresscode
Part of the magic of Oktoberfest is the traditional Bavarian clothing.
Men wear checked shirts with leather trousers (Lederhosen), long socks, and sturdy Haferl shoes.
Women don the colorful and elegant Dirndl.
The position of the bow on a Dirndl tells its own story:
Bow on the right → Taken
Bow on the left → Single
Bow in the middle → Virgin
Bow at the back → Widow or waitress
Practical Tips for a Great Oktoberfest Experience
💶 Bring Cash Many beer tents still don’t accept credit cards. Even if they do, tipping your waitress or waiter is done in cash. ATMs around the Theresienwiese often have long queues, so withdraw your money beforehand.
🏨 Stay Close The festival closes relatively early depending on the tent, and public transport gets packed. Booking a hotel within walking distance may cost €30–40 more per night, but it’s worth it – you can head back easily for a quick break or call it a night without long waits.
💁♀️ Tip Generously – and Early A good tip at the start of your stay will make your waitress or waiter smile and may speed up your orders. Service staff work hard during Oktoberfest, and showing appreciation goes a long way.
🎶 Follow the FunThe best atmosphere is where the music is loud and people are singing together. That’s where you’ll find the true Oktoberfest spirit.
🛡 Security Matters Security teams inside the tents are alert and effective – they handle situations quickly, especially if someone has had one beer too many. Be aware: obviously intoxicated guests won’t be allowed inside the tents.
⛑ Medical Help You’ll find multiple Red Cross stations with professional doctors and nurses ready to assist with any health concerns.
👮 Police & Lost & Found There’s a small police station on-site for emergencies or if you’ve lost someone. The lost & found office is there to reunite you with your belongings – even that iPhone left on a beer bench.
